Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death for children under 5 years old, and Hillsborough county leads the State with these statistics. Kari Bahour founded two scholarship opportunities for financially disadvantaged families under the belief that every child should have the opportunity to learn survival swimming skills.
As a result of the 2 fatal drownings and 1 non-fatal drowning that occurred in September of 2019 (Tampa and Oviedo), a new scholarship opportunity has now become available directly from Watch Me Swim, LLC and partnered swim schools. Families who do not qualify for a full scholarship from Water Smart Tots, Inc. (see below), but genuinely cannot afford to pay for the full cost of lessons can receive a partial scholarship from Watch Me Swim and other partnered survival swim schools. These scholarships are specifically for one-on-one, survival swim lessons and available for a limited number of students. Instructors do not get reimbursed for these partial scholarships and volunteer their time and expertise to help those with a genuine need. Water Smart Tots, Inc. is a 501(C) 3 nonprofit organization founded in 2014 after 4 children drowned in the Tampa Bay area on Mother's Day weekend. Water Smart Tots, Inc. is dedicated to eliminating pediatric drowning by promoting awareness through water safety education and by providing full scholarships for survival swim lessons for children who are financially disadvantaged. Families who currently receive food stamps or full medicaid can be eligible for a full scholarship.
